Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw
The blue-and-gold macaw is an exquisite bird that is known for its stunning visual appeal. Its sociable personality makes it a wonderful companion for families. It also excels in interaction and can learn phrases and tricks quickly.

Lolita's Personality
Macaws are a great companion bird. They are incredibly affectionate and intelligent. They are best with well-rounded families. They can become bored quickly and find ways to entertain themselves when their owners aren't engaged with them often enough. If not properly socialized macaws can become aggressive and can even bite. It is important that boundaries are clearly established so that the macaw doesn't feel threatened.
Blue and Gold Macaws, in general, are active birds who love to play, interact and climb. They need to spend at least 2 to 3 hours each day in the outdoors for mental stimulation and physical exercise. They enjoy playing games as well as listening to music and learning new tricks. They also enjoy playing in parks and playgrounds, hiking and visiting local restaurants and bars. They are not only an excellent pet, but they are also a great pet for children.
The birds can be quite loud, despite their affection for their mate. They can also be a nuisance for those who live nearby. They are capable of loud, ear-splitting calls and screech-calls which can be disruptive in apartments and condos or in close proximity to children who might be scared by their roar.
Another intriguing characteristic of this particular species is that it is monomorphic, which means that males and females are hard to differentiate. This is why DNA testing is the only reliable way to determine sex. Once the sex of the birds is known the breeding process can begin.
Like all pets, Blue and Gold Macaws require training to master commands, phrases and tricks. This can be a long process and the owner must be patient and recognize that this is a challenging task. Positive reinforcement can help speed up the process and help to correct any behavior issues.
Lolita's care
For years, activists have been pleading for the retirement of Lolita's tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy stirred public outrage over orca Keiko's reintegration back into the wild, activists and marine biologists hoped Lolita might suffer the same fate. Unfortunately, she didn't get a chance to return to the sea.
Lolita's captors, also known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her in danger. They sabotage her health by requiring her to perform for tourists, and over-exerting her with high-speed circles and head-first dives, which expose her to chlorine, causing her to lose weight and weakening her immune system. Additionally, they put her in an incredibly small tank that is less than one-and-a half times the size of her natural habitat.
Fortunately, in 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates called Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who consider her an ancestor and plan that would eventually take her to open waters. The plan would have included a facility in Washington's west coast, in which she could reside for the duration of her life, receive medical attention and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen would be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and be surrounded by the ocean itself not a concrete tank.
If the plan had been successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki), might still be alive. In the wild, killers whales are social animals that bond with their family members until they die. Lolita has been a captive at Seaquarium for the past 40 years. People from all over the country have called for Lolita's retirement from Seaquarium and then release into the wild. They include Ric O'Barry, a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

System II builds upon the repertoire introduced in System 1 through exercises using equipment. It also introduces teachers to exercises that use the Spine Corrector, Magic Circle, Foam Rollers and Bars. This module comes with a manual, and a DVD featuring Lolita teaching you the system.
After graduating from Lolita's teacher training program you'll be prepared to teach the Pilates Method anywhere in the world! This program will prepare you to work effectively, safely and professionally with clients. You will gain a deep understanding of the various exercises and how they interact. Lolita's Diet
Like any species of animal in captivity, a captive blue and gold macaw's health is based on a balanced diet. These beautiful birds need high-quality food items, and lots of fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. A well-fed macaw in captivity could live up to 60 years old. The majestic bird also requires plenty of space to fly and exercise.
A gold and blue macaw is a charming pet but is also extremely intelligent. They are known for their ability to learn new tricks and vocabulary quickly. This bird is perfect for those just beginning their journey to an avian companionship.
Additionally, this bird requires plenty of interaction and will bond with her human family members easily. Blue and gold macaws are known to have loud vocalizations like "flock call" as a part of their natural behavior. They may even be able to chew and squabble, especially when they are bored or frustrated. This type of behavior should be expected by prospective pet owners.
Miami Seaquarium released a series updates on Lolita's status and health however there are many questions. Some experts, such as Akromas who was a trainer or supervised the care of Lolita at some point, have raised concerns about her diet. The most recent update on the Friends of Lolita website states that she is eating 115 pounds of salmon, capelin, herring, and squid every day.
Miami Seaquarium, and in particular Lolita has been criticised for the quality of the food they provide to their killer whales. The orca, who was 57 years old, was rescued from Puget Sound in 1970, and while the species is endangered in the wild, she lives in an aquarium that many claim is too small for her.
Lolita's Health
Lolita is beautiful, however her health continues to decline. Her health has been a cause of concern for animal welfare groups that wish to see her released back to the wild. Lolita has been living at the Miami Seaquarium since 1970 and performed as a tourist attraction for decades. She has been battling chronic illnesses and a debilitating disease that has left her in a vulnerable condition.
The Miami Seaquarium is now owned by the Dolphin Company, has not provided information about Lolita's present state of health. However, the non-profit group Friends of Toki has provided monthly updates about her health and well-being on their website. These updates show that Toki is ageing rapidly and that her health has declined.
It is unclear what specific health issues are affecting the orca, since her captor isn't required to divulge this information. However, a database of necropsies from Sea World that was created by the Orca Project shows that kidney disease is a major factor in the death of captive orcas.
Despite the health issues that continue to plague of Lolita, many people believe that she could be closer than ever before to a wild life. The new owner of Seaquarium has stated his commitment to move the whale from her tank into her native waters in the Pacific.
After years of pressure from PETA and others and the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a seaside sanctuary where she can go swimming in the deep sea, perhaps even reunited with her orca mother. These plans came too late to save the whale who passed away on Friday due to what was thought to be a kidney problem.
